The United States of America vast western expanse was joined to the east on May 10, 1869 when the two great railroads The Union Pacific and The Central Pacific met train to train at Promontor Summit, Utah. When Leland Standford drove the Golden Spike and the telegraph signaled to Washington and San Francisco "done" the United States Transcontinental Railway was born. Americans could now travel east to west in the amazing time of 5 days and at a cost of only $47.00 compared to 5 months and the cost of $2000 for fitting oneself out on a wagon train. But remember, there were no sleeping compartments nor were the seats plush. Either way travel was a lot better than behind an ox or horse team.
